Community Medical Centers

A Healing Journey in Talent Development

Situation

Community Medical Centers (CMC), a beacon of hope for underserved communities, annually supports 112,000 patients with a dedicated team of 900 employees. Originating in the 1960s to serve farm workers and now focusing on homeless populations, CMC's noble mission demands high morale, especially within their Finance Department—the organization's financial pillar. However, integrating a new leader into this crucial team, particularly during a global pandemic, presented significant challenges, including natural skepticism and potential disconnect within the team.

Task

Our objective at Activate was to facilitate a smooth leadership transition within CMC's Finance Department, ensuring team cohesion and operational continuity. This involved breaking down barriers between the new leader and the existing team, understanding individual and collective needs, and fostering an environment of trust and collaboration.

Action

We initiated our strategy by creating two comprehensive behavioral profiles to assist the new leader in understanding each team member's unique strengths and challenges. Following this, we conducted an Employee Engagement survey to identify unmet needs within the team. Armed with this data, we collaborated closely with CMC to develop a tailored, evidence-based roadmap aimed at nurturing a harmonious, high-performing team dynamic.

Results

Our people-centric approach led to a successful leadership transition, marked by improved internal communication, heightened morale, and enhanced teamwork. The strategic application of behavioral insights and engagement tools not only supported the team members but also fortified the department's resilience and efficacy during challenging times.

“The investment we’ve made with Activate is small compared to the lack of productivity and staffing agency costs we were seeing before Activate.”
